Upon turning after school candy sales into a $2,000 a week business at age 11, Spectacular Smith discovered he was an entrepreneur. That realization would take him first to the heights of popular music, and then to success as a business owner, label owner, author, and beyond.
A dancer since the third grade, Smith took his childhood love of performing into the rap group he formed with his brothers, Pretty Ricky. His father was the manager of the group, and taught his son the importance of making money at an early age. “He taught the key elements to becoming successful,” Smith says. “He took the power I had already, and taught me what to do with it.”
Spectacular contributed musically and also choreographed the group’s explosive stage shows—performances that won them a deal with Atlantic Records. The group went on to huge worldwide success: filling arenas on the Scream IV tour, selling millions of singles and ringtones, and earning huge hits with “Grind With Me,” “Your Body,” and “On The Hotline.”
Music stardom was just the first stage of Spectacular Smith’s career. Intrigued by the business possibilities of social media, he turned Pretty Ricky’s Facebook page into his personal laboratory, testing out his theories behind social networks for a full year until he had a new, unbreakable system of gaining and monetizing followers. He then turned those ideas into
Adwizar, the dominant social media brand in the urban music space. The company runs the Facebook pages of artists such as Bow Wow, Kevin Gates, Soulja Boy, Master P, Birdman, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and countless others. They have also had stunning success with hip-hop’s hottest label, Cash Money Records, garnering the label an astonishing 75,000 new Facebook likes in a single week.
Adwizar has now grown beyond urban music into dealing with major brands and corporations, athletes, merchandising deals, and more. The company was also featured on Forbes.com for its innovative methods, and has no ceiling on its growth.
Smith has not left music behind. He has a record label called Mula Music Group, which will be releasing his solo album Sex God, featuring collaborations with Rich Homie Quan, Too Short, Twista, Tory Lanez, and other major artists. The label has recently signed West Coast artist Compton Menace, who is ringing up millions of YouTube views for his new single with Chris Brown, “Put On.”
As if all that wasn’t enough, Smith is in the midst of conquering the publishing world as well. His book Spectacular Love: How to Make Your Love Last will serve as the definitive relationship guide for a generation that too often seems unable to make relationships work.
Spectacular Smith never stops hustling—something he learned from his parents.
“My mom was a hustler, and my pops was a hustler,” he recalls. “My dad was a multi-millionaire even before we became Pretty Ricky. He always had the best cars and the biggest house. Always seeing him hustling taught me how to hustle, and made me realize that I already had it in me. But he made sure that I knew the power of being a hustler, and how far I could get if I wasn’t lazy. He taught me the fundamentals of being an entrepreneur.”
Those fundamentals, first seen in that long-ago candy selling business, continue to take Spectacular Smith to new creative and entrepreneurial heights. After conquering the worlds of music, social media, and publishing, the world is waiting to see what he does next.
